The Hollowmen is a new comedy drama from Australian Broadcasting Network, and debuts this week in Australia. It’s from Working Dog Productions, the talented team responsible for one of my all-time favourite TV shows: Frontline. A series of six episodes, beginning on ABC TV Wednesday from 9:30pm - well worth checking out.

Google Movies - Australia

This was news to me: Google Australia has movie listings. This looks to be by far the easiest way to figure out what’s on locally, and it’s ad free. Thanks to web guru Carl!

Michael Bay’s Rejected Script for The Dark Knight.

JOKER unleashes an all-out barrage of missiles, like the biggest fucking missiles you will ever see. BATMAN shoots his own back, and they all collide into each other in the middle of the highway releasing a violent explosion, and then, an explosion within that explosion. Afterward: one last explosion, this time in slow motion, with tanks flying out of it.

Maus

I’ve just finished reading Maus, by Art Spiegelman. It’s a comic book based on the author’s father’s experiences as a Jewish prisoner of war in Auschwitz during World War II. The characters are portrayed as different animals; the Jews are mice, the Nazis are cats.

The story is about more than the concentration camp, however. It’s told from the point of view of Art Spiegelman and explores his relationship with his father, Vladek Spiegelman, who he finds simultaneously inspirational and extremely frustrating. This metanarrative delivers an intensely personal story, while also allowing for some clever self-referential humour. The comic book format allows for the relationships to be explored without getting tangled up in the physical reality of the situation. It’s a very moving, inspirational work - highly recommended.

Let Your Fingers Do The ... Uh, Typing

Here’s a handy shell history reference from Allan Odgaard of Textmate fame. Everything that he mentions also applies to zsh, my favourite shell. I’m still amazed that zsh isn’t more popular - it’s a superset of everything Bash, and just as easy (or difficult, depending on your point of view) to learn.

Overheard in New York

Just stumbled upon this site via Dive Into Mark - snippets of overheard conversations in NYC. Here’s an example:

Mother with little girl: Excuse me. My daughter wants to know if you’re a pirate.

Woman wearing bandana: No. I’m just a lesbian.

Overheard in New York. Very entertaining.
