It’s Not a Wheel. It’s a TV Programme.

Everyone’s favourite drama about a fictional advertising agency in the 1960s is set to return in August. There hasn’t been anywhere near enough on-screen smoking, womanising, and casual alcoholism since season two ended.

Last Day Dream

Your life, summed up in 42 seconds. Poignant! And shot on a digital SLR, no less.

In Bb 2.0

People record themselves, either singing or playing an instrument, in B major. The videos are arranged in a 4x4 grid. You play any of them, at any time, in any order. A beautiful, randomly textured sound emerges.

If you’ve ever assembled anything from Ikea, these ads should appeal to you. Especially Poäng.

You Don't Look a Day Over 47 Million

A new fossil has been discovered in Germany, a primitive primate nicknamed Ida. While the papers are going berserk with “missing link” headlines, anything that dismantles Creationism’s already flimsy arguments further is most welcome, and I, for one, welcome our new fossilised ancestors.

Edit: Upon re-reading this post, I realise I should have used the word “preposterous”, rather than flimsy. Apologies for the inconvenience.

The Road

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Since moving to North Bondi, I’ve been commuting by bus. Consequently my book consumption has sky-rocketed (notwithstanding all the bad music from tinny earbuds one must endure). Since the route to work involves a road, what better book to read than The Road, Cormac McCarthy’s tale of a father and son travelling south in a post-apocalyptic USA. The reason for the desolation is not revealed, but the description of the freezing, barren landscape is so compelling we’re drawn into their situation and the reason does not matter. It’s simply and sparsely written, never descending into lecture or schmaltz, yet provides many humorous and touching moments. The world they inhabit is believable and well-considered; McCarthy has clearly thought his dystopia through. Despite being grim, tragic, and foreboding, I didn’t want it to end. Highly recommended.

Demo Magazine : issue two

Ludicrously large music magazine Demo has hit the streets again after a three year hiatus. The brainchild of identical twins Mark and Andrew Moffitt, it features achingly hip design and photography while showcasing Aussie bands. I just happen to have been the guy that built the website, and I’ve just finished updating it for issue two

German Girls Are Hot And Strong

At least according to Dave the Chimp they are, and who’s to argue? His illustrations are wünderbar. The creative nerds at Creative Review have a mini-interview.

Here’s Dave the Chimp’s bananatastic website.

D&AD Nominations Announced

Just when the world has caught its breath from the giddy rollercoaster ride that constitutes the Chris Doyle Identity Guidelines™ – he’s been nominated for a bloody D&AD silver pencil. I shall allow myself to lapse into shameless self-promotion yet again and proudly point out that I was none other than the photographer.
